  • Boron is a true three-electron metallocene. It doesn't have any low-energy open shells, so it can't gain an electron to go back to the ground state. So there are no other electron configurations of Boron -unless you take into account quantum mechanics, that is! Unlike classical physics theories, which are only able to describe the movement of electrons in probability distributions over definite orbits, if one assumes that reality has uncertainty at molecular scales (due for instance to Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle), then quanta may have whatever energy level they wish.

It doesn't have any other configurations because the next higher energy level is 3/4 filled according to Aufbau principle and it can't have more electrons for this reason. In simple words- It's already as packed as it can possibly get!

Boron-11 occurred as a precursor to life, and better understanding of its structure could be the key to unlocking more about how life developed on our planet. Unfortunately though, boron-11 is radioactive and has a half-life of 18 seconds! So for now we will just have to study the other more stable configurations of this important element.
